4 steps for when your scared dog won’t go outside

One of the most common challenges my students with fearful and anxious dogs face, is that their dogs are too scared to go outside to potty.  What should they do? Carry their dog out? Pull them out on a leash? 

Forcing your scared dog to go outside is a bad idea, if you want to gain their trust and build their confidence. Instead, I recommend setting up an indoor potty area for now, and then following these steps to help them become brave enough to go out on their own:

The process of building your traumatized dog's confidence is often gradual and will take a lot of love and patience on your part. But stick with it- the results will be so rewarding, for both of you.
